Barebone computers offer  certain advantages and disadvantages.  However, when building your own desktop PC,  you will want to consider the following:

Advantages:

· It is cheaper.  You can source your own components from discount retailers, computer warehouses, auctions and  clearance centers.

· You can get good quality components if you buy them yourself.  For example, you can get cases for about $30 or less depending on where you go.  A motherboard could cost between $60 to $70 with DDR memory modules running about $70.

· You do not have to pay anyone for maintenance.  By building it yourself, you will have a fair idea of identifying and correcting any problems if they occur.

Disadvantages:

· No warranty will be available on the system you build.

· Depending on the speed of the unit you build, it will take some time for you to install all the software you need to use.  You will also need to know how to install the software you need.

· You must educate yourself on what to do to protect your the system from viruses, spyware and other threats.

Now that I have identified some of the advantages and disadvantages of building your own computer, let us look at Barebone Computers specifically.

A barebone computer is one that usually comes with a case and a motherboard already installed like the one shown here.  Some may look like complete systems but you need to look inside the case to see what components are included.

Systemax Barebones Desktop PC

If you want to save yourself some time, you can get a really cheap barebone computer to start building your system.

A great place you can visit immediately is TigerDirect where you will find barebone systems in different sizes and within various price ranges from well known makers like Asus, Systemax and others.

With a barebone unit you may need to add a hard disk, a CD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD drive, memory and a CPU which can either be one from Intel or AMD. Some motherboards will have integrated sound and graphics but if they are not available, you will have to add them.

Barebone systems will have the important connecting ports available such as USB, sound and printer connections. Some will even carry Firewire connections. Connections will be located at both the back and front depending on the function.

Many deals are available on barebone systems and you can save a lot of money by building the computer yourself.
